Ahedres

I guess ibang field of intelligence ang game katulad ng Chess -- Spatial siguro?

Complicated but yet simple.

I am planning my future move that might be smacked down the moment I lay it. But with insight your next move that you will have to enact seems to be appropriate.

How many moves ahead have you planned? Are they rigid or adaptable to change? Or you even haven't decided yet.

Finally found it in National Bookstore sa Glorietta -- sa wakas!

National Bookstore -- Dameng Books

Witty and funny, not to mention hardcore. That is Ella's story match with her story telling. Kahit nabasa ko na ito the first time nung unang lumabas ang blog nya and she was still anonymous back then, i still get that sympathy for the young innocent ella, and the respect as she develops and learned how to fight back.

She told stories and opened issues we know that are there but we refuse to look at. Scenarios so sad that we thought they only happen on movies and telenovelas. Hopes and dreams that make things possible and happen.

It might just be an entertainment story for some. But on higher sense, Ella's stories serves as an inspiration, that even on adversities, just as long as a person haven't given up on one's self, the promise is still there, and its up to us to fulfill it as well.

Lesson Plans and Grade Records

I've been optimizing and maintaining Trish's PC -- and i get to talk to his wife Jo,

Yeah, the big notebook Elementary Lesson Plan, all of the subjects written on it which is identically the same with the ones written last year.

???

I asked for the reason why write it over and over again.

"Kasi para alam na handa ka sa subject mo at dapat handwritten para alam na ikaw ang gumawa..."

???
(*scratches head)

Elementary -- Basic Subjects -- Lesson Plan --Handwritten -- Rewritten again -- and again
and that's the same subjects all over again!

That may be good in the sense that siguradong handa si teacher na magturo sa maliliit na bata.
That system works great back in the 80's but in the time right now. I guess there should be a little upgrade on such said system.

and then comes the Records for the Grades that must be handwritten as well.
done with calculators when it can just be done with Microsoft Excel or Open Office Spreadsheet or Lotus 123 (even Lotus 123 is already obsolete my goodness!)

But i guess that just go for two Public Schools -- maybe it doesn't go that way on other schools.
But just the thought... wow...

and some College(s) struggle with their syllabi!

PC Broker – Nice Surplus Computer Deals

Electronics sure depreciate quickly nowadays– Last year, when I bought my PC it took me almost Php18000 to completely assemble it, and my specs were;

2.9GHz Pentium D
P4M890M MSI MotherBoard
256MB DDR2 Memory
Nvidia GeForCe 7100 GS Video Card
Lite OnDVD R/W Combo Drive
15" Giant CRT Monitor
Generic Floppy Disk Drive
Trendsonic Tower CPU
Generic MOuse/Keyboard
Computer Table

I had to throw in another Php900.00 for 1GB RAM and and another Php3000.00 for the 80GB Harddisk. (Not putting in consideration the Softwares...)

BUt Last Thursday (October 16, 2008), I helped Trish to assemble his PC. He told me that his budget is only Php10000. I told him that we have no choice but to stick to surplus PCs.

We went to PC Broker, a surplus shop in SM Valenzuela -- it didn't took much effort to assemble the PC since they have these bundled assembled PCs and for less than Php10000 we get to have this!

General Specs includes

3.2GHz Pentium 4 (Massive Heat Sink!)
Dell Motherboard (wasn't able to note exact model)
VGA Built-In Video Card
Built-In LAN and Sound Card
1GB DDR Memory
160 GB SATA Harddisk
48x CDROM
Dell Tower CPU Case (and its quite heavy!)
Generic Mouse/Keyboard

and for only Php7500!

There was another model there sold for the same price with the following specs. Un lang nakareserve na eh... sayang!

We only had to throw another Php1900.00 for the 17" CRT Monitor since LCD Screens cost Php4500.00 and there, we were able to put up a modest PC!

I'm not sure how old these PCs are or how much computing time they were already subjected into. Pero ang galing eh, and to think that they were suppose to buy a PSP instead. At least this machine is actually more useful. :)
at last bagong posT! :D

A Leader Touches the Heart before He Reaches for a Hand

Hay... very timely...

Sloth

Sloth
Setting: Usual Morning

Character(s):

Eman: a technical/vocational college student taking up a Computer Science – unsure of the path to take, enjoys the company of his friends, a typical easy go lucky guy

Tiffany: pregnant friend of Eman
Ryan: Tiffany’s Boyfriend

Greg: Eman’s Sales Engineer friend

Nora: Nurse – Mang Gusting’s Daughter

Narrator:
(Eman walking holding a paper bag of pandesal and eggs)
Eman is walking – doing his normal routine in an early morning buying pandesal and eggs for breakfast, he is noticeably in smiling mode, since the family will be feasting on adobo this morning, left over from last night’s party thrown by Mang Gusting whose daughter just came home from United Kingdom as a registered nurse. The morning is good and the neighbor is still in festive mood sharing the kind fortune bestowed upon the humble and kind family of Mang Gusting.

(Eman Still Walking)
Eman is making a mental run down of what he is going to do today – he is scheduled for an interview as a crew for a fastfood not to far from his school, he is still having some second thoughts since the fastfood is too near from their school – he is imagining his classmates teasing him when he gets to be in those uniforms

Eman: If only I got in that fastfood near the palengke, it would not only be convenient for me it would also save me being teased by my classmates, if father would just be more than a jeepney driver worked abroad perhaps I’ll be enjoying more of my youth. Damn… (Eman slight shaking his head)

(Eman walk across Tiffany and Ryan)

Eman: Hi Tiff – how is it going?

Tiffany: (Holding back his bulging belly) Nothing much, besides no longer going to school, you know I’ll be giving birth soon because of your bastard friend over here. Who got me pregnant.

Ryan: Nah – like you didn’t enjoyed it, see? I’ll be graduating by the end of summer, our son would be my graduation gift, my parents will be handling the expenses for now but as soon as I get a job we can make it on our own.

Tiffany: Nice plan Ryan – minimum salary, yeah our lives are really promising (sarcastic tone)

Ryan: Well it’s not the a very elaborate plan but what else do we got? This is it.

Tiffany: Enough of you already, (facing Eman) so how was your interview there in Jollibee near the palengke? If you got in maybe you can endorse this friend of yours, maybe he an grow some spine.

Eman: I blew it, those interview questions are hard and tricky – they got me with a question I wasn’t able to answer quickly

Ryan: What was it tol? (Ryan placed his arms around Tiffany)

Eman: “Where do you see yourself in five years”

Narrator: Five years… even Tiffany and Ryan paused for the question, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Uncertain – Tiffany was thinking about her baby, Ryan – thinking how to feed his would be family, Eman – just baffled.

Eman: It is not like I don’t have a plan – but (raised head wondering) maybe its just rough yet, five years is a long time.

Ryan: Tol just remember you really don’t have to be that honest for these interviews – you’ll just be flipping burgers what do they care about that.

Tiffany: Yeah genius (slightly slapped Ryan on the face) – think about five years as well, (faces again Eman) oh well Eman, I hope you get that job from the fastfood near your school, requirements can be expensive you know. Anyway we have to go now – Bye.

(Looked back to Tiffany and Ryan as if woken up from a short day dream)

Eman: Una na kayo? Bye…

(Tiffany and Ryan moved along)
( Eman Walked opposite from them)

(As Eman walk away he bumped on to Greg – Greg is wearing long sleeves and carrying a plastic case with folders and papers in it, Greg walking with head a little bowed mumbling words)

(Eman instantly checked for the eggs if none of them were broken)

Greg: Ooops Sorry Eman – I was mentally practicing for my sales pitch I didn’t noticed you sooner, your eggs ok?

(Eman faced Greg)

Eman: My eggs are ok… where are you going in that formal wear? May cotillion ba?

(Eman smiled)

Greg: No, this is included on or dress code. I got accepted as a Sales Engineer! Not much on the engineering and techie stuffs and compensation is just minimum wage – but there is a very good commission package – I just have to sell enough get on a quota and I can earn double even triple a month! Plus the products are very good, I know I’ll just have to get this straight and this would be good.

Eman: Commission? Those Engineering equipment are priced by the thousands, ten – hundred thousands even. How can you make sure that you’ll get that quota?

Greg: That’s the challenge right there! I would just have to stick to my go get attitude – and my long term plans are really my motivation. I’m not planning to be a sales man forever, I plan to have people working for me as well.

Eman: You got those kind of plans laid out? Wow.

Greg: Yeah, and this is where it will all begins.

(Smiled contently and proud for Greg)

Eman: I hope the best for you bro. “Galingan mo!”

Greg: Thanks pare…

(Greg walked away)

(Eman raises his head wondering – day dreaming again,)

Narrator: A laid out plan or a carefree attitude – Eman got him thinking “five years? where am I gonna be five years?”

“Will I still be earning minimum wage?”
“Will I get another degree?”
“Will I be taking care of a child?”

“Five years?”

He realized how such simple question baffled him.
How he wasn’t able to get the job flipping burgers just by the same

Five years…

It is more than that.
It is more than the plan you committed yourself into.
It is however short, if you decide to be lazy and never made such decisions

(Eman continued walking…)

Five years

It is short if you will allow yourself to just sloth away youth, and be regretful of the wasted time.
Or decide your action NOW, Plan, dream and chase for them
Success or Failure both of them don’t come in a day or won overnight.

Both of them are slow process, determined by the questions you answer today

(Nora’ Mang Gusting’s Daughter walk pass Eman on her nurse uniform)

As Nora – Mang Gusting’s Daughter passed Eman – Eman got to think.

I can be a winner to.
It just have to start today…

(Nora exits…)

Eman smiled… he will not just be having pandesal, sunny side ups, adobo and sinangag for breakfast.

(End.)

Tullahan Goldmine

Tullahan Goldmine -- Metaphor

Besides being included in World Record's dirtiest river, the Tullahan River have another thing on it that makes it more popular, dyaraaan! The Tullahan Goldmine!

With the Tullahan Bridge construction already completed October/November 2007 it didn't took long that another rehabilitation project took place. The rehabilitation is for the roads at both ends of the bridge easily cracked by wear and tear.

So the road reblocking is in place. If the bridge was concrete and steel reinforced why didn't they just used concrete on the roads instead of asphalt? Makes you think, makes you wonder. Is it a road their maintaining there or another goldmine, kasi kung goldmine pala yun, i-expect na ang susunod na repair sa di malayong panahon.

ah yes... pathetic as ever -- all i can write as of the moment are my whinings about roads... geez...
oh wel.. :)

Island Widening

Yeah, yeah... Its either the work doesn't want you or you have lots of it, with the brain drain exodus phenomena at hand the restless nights and the all the restless everything coming to our department is inevitable. But I’ll not be whining about that because I for some reason believe that there’s good at it, besides building character. There must be.

Unlike the total genius being built along NAIA Road, with all the congestions and stuff, the solution is always road widening right? The roads are congested because vehicles can't get enough of these roads. But its different in NAIA Road (near PAGCOR) their genius f#@%ed up solution is to widen up the center islands!

Island Widening -- makes hardly any sense...

It escapes me whoever planned those things were thinking. Is that to manage the the traffic flow? Or was that another makeshift project to generate kickback opportunity? It has more crap that MMDA's (Un)reflectorized Concrete barrier s#!t! Like c'mon...

Did I mentioned one time I was commuting, our FX taxi ran over one of those islands? Those are dangerous garbage! If they are really serious building those crap, complete them already, so it would not be too obvious na binuo lang yun para sa income opportunity . Or if they were all satisfied juicing the s#it project, they can just abort the project.

Clarity

It was already 1600H when I get to read Bam's SMS round 1210H.

"Read my e-mail? Endorsement? SWO? Malupit na definitions or testing? Hmn..."

Geez, no more surprise assignments please, just had enough to keep me awake for all night and my body clock is almost 3 weeks out of sync.

"Naah... I'll check when I get in the office, surprise me later".

I then decided to hold the suspense and grabbed some more snooze.

Rested and fed for the graveyard duty, it’s as usual -- colorful subjects, inspirational and funny forwards, overseen pending, for sure the night will not be boring.

Then I get to check Bam’s e-mail.

CDS Alumni Homecoming? It made me somehow checked Camp Smart making sure how long it was since then. My tenure is 2years and 2months. Whew, 2years since the CDS. Thinking back it seemed so short, but somehow I vaguely remember the details of that 2years, as if it just passed through me.

But nonetheless it is nostalgic. I can even smell the Tagaytay pineapples. I still can’t picture my surprise that I actually made it in Smart and now its two years.

Wow.

1230AM – Corniest Name Awardee | Originally 30

It’s almost like first day in school. And the whole CDS Program felt like a big field trip. Complete with seminars, walkthroughs, massive note taking, group activities and even the written exams! All crammed in six months plus graduation. With parting is such sweet sorrow cliché, time also came for the batch to be individually be assigned to their respective teams.

Friends we made through college are friends we most likely to keep our whole lives and that’s 5+ years. Amazingly enough, it only took six months to give my confidence that the batch I am with, will be such friends just the same. We may not be that updated with each others lives, may not be that together all the time. Sometimes we get to meet only though casual meetings and consolidated isolations but the “at home” feel is really… all the same

Like real graduations there were tears of joy, of little sadness – looking all back it was promising, now as the year pass, its just as good as it gets and the best is yet to come; challenging, at times frustrating, and satisfactorily rewarding and everyone’s success not just radiates to the team where an Astig belongs, but marks a score to all Astigs, as refreshing as the joy that we are happy for a friend’s success and achievement.

“San na tayo next?”

Like friends we would share frustrations and happiness of success – like heck, Batch 12, we are 2 years old in this field and still counting. As we all reckon what would be our next move, as we complete or draw setbacks on our next projects. Or discuss our next small scheme, like when are we really going to complete that green jacket with the Overdose brand? (I will not stick my nose to our next gimmick since I’m usually one with those who get to miss it. Next to those who are situated in the provinces J) we get to realize where we are to proceed next.

“Kaya nga… Where are we going next?”

One of the lessons I learned from that two years is being Objective. Harsh as it may be, it’s regardless of the efforts we make, winning is either a yes or a no. it’s either a met deadline or a mediocre late one. Ironically winning does not equate to success, for success is a process, an everyday choice and commitment much like friendships, the relationships we have with our colleagues, family and everyone around us, and the Astig’s friendship makes a good fit in the process.

“Pero san nga?”

Life is a Journey naman dibs? So we journey on. Strive through more promising and challenging projects. The Network Wars is sure more cut throat than ever. That’s a good focus – stay on top, continually evolve and stay ahead of the game, and at the end of the day when success meets the winners, we will all be defined with clarity to have settled for nothing less. The day after that we will still be prepared and enjoy another horizon looking forward way ahead.

“Astig Me…”

Start of Classes

first day -- blockbuster

Sobrang late for first day of school tong article ko neh?

Somehow on this light conversations nagsisimula ang well, greater friendships and stuffs. I overhear them talking about difficulties about algebra, how hard it is to stay alert when you're too tired from a part time job, kwela ba ang mag fastfood crew, bakit masungit si ma’am poodle -- kulang lang ba sya?, heads-up lang kay sir ano kasi smiling lang sya pero nambabagsak.

Those were the days…

Mas light ang buhay nung estudyante pa – ang totoo mas light ang buhay nung mas bata pa… smaller circle simpler problems. Small circle, small circle, big circles… kaya siguro yun tinuturo nung kinder ano?

I like the idea that all of us are students of life, enrolled lifetime, we do small graduations just to be enrolled on another class, even if we like it or not…

Can’t stay on a subject too long… must face the fact that we still need to graduate.

Hah… moving on, moving on :)

Dakak Experience

Sa totoo lang, whenever I hear Dakak – I can’t help but remember Jaloshos as well.

But more than the scandal that happened in this resort few years back, being in Dakak is sure is a relaxing vacation – bakit ko ba dinidikit yun, nah. Walang maisip na intro wehe.

We left for the airport around 9:00am, sa wakas three days break from office work and all, to refresh and reflect. After boarding for Dipolog, I can’t remember much about the flight. Medyo nagising lang ako nung nagpa-games yung mga flight attendant ng Cebu Pacific where you can win ID laces. They also have on-board snacks (sandwiches, chips, cola and beer –for PHP100.00 hehe) and even souvenirs (shades, ID laces, plane model, etc).

With tripod and lenses and the works! Nahiya ang camera ng phone ko! Nah niweys ang ganda rin ng view.

Reception – Parang view sa Park

After some chit chat with at the reception and welcome drinks, Dinala na kami sa resort proper.

Lunch by the beach – Nakakagana

Benj – Beach Model

Mabs and Benj – Dynamic Duo

Beach sa Tanghali – Mainit

Dakak Greens – Berdeng Hindi Nakakasawa

Pati ang kwarto – Native ang dating!
Probinsyang-probinsya! Teka, probinsya nga ito dibs? Niweys.

Kwarto – Pagtalunan kung sino ang mahihiga saan.

As usual wala akong pictures habang naliligo – nothing to see there anyways. Comparing to Boracay, Dakak’s strong point is the fact na mas konti ang tao dito, yun lang wala ring night life sa Dakak – talagang pang relax sya, tahimik na ang paligid by 10:00 or 11:00pm, highlight na sa gabi ang kanilang cultural show -- spicing up the dinner besides the beach area.

Dinner by the Beach – Serene

Niweys, comes Day 2.

Sa umaga, as you can expect – Dakak have a peaceful Morning beach

Dakak
Beach
in the Morning – Peaceful

After the hefty breakfast we prepared for the “City Tour” visiting Dapitan there we get to see a replica of Rizal’s Clinic, Kitchen and Environment – hindi talaga sya City Tour kung tutuusin kasi wala naman kami sa city proper.

Further through the day, and I guess the highlight of it is the Sunset Cruise. Its an hour long Cruise via Bangka. On that same moment I get to realize the undeniable gap between an N73 3.2 MP Camera and a Nikon 10 MP SLR Camera. Makes you want one of those shutters. Haaay….

Sunset Catchers – Annoying

Nikon SLR Camera -- Wow...

On our last night we enjoyed the swimming and an ample amount of sleep. Geez! Ang sarap (especially the sleep part), when you get to have something you really get to treasure it. I myself enjoyed the whole vacation, revitalizing and gets you’re spirit really high so high you can get to see a good view of the new horizon one is traversing.

Taal Volcano above – Malupit na view by a Pasaway

All is so peaceful and the night sleep is sound –kinabukasan pasok na ulit!
Yehe! Yung lang :D Which brings us to our next article...

Goals and Teamwork – a DOTA Analogy

Have you ever heard people who says that DOTA, Warcraft or Violent Videogames are evil? I mean instrumento daw ng demonyo yada yada?

Of course there can be better analogy stuffs that we can employ to discuss Goals and Teamwork, but for my entry – I’ll be using DOTA hehe… enjoy!

DOTA All Stars – Hindi lang puro patayan :D

Know your goals, whatever it is. Set it up – vision it happening, Plan your course of action, know the requirements and sacrifices, skills or tools you might need and help you might employ. Para sa analogy na to, target nating buwagin ang Frozen Throne, and to vanquish evil forever! Woooooh noble!

Second Thing about Teamwork, Know Yourself – para sa malupit analogy na to, I’ll be using Shadow Shaman -- Rhasta Baby tadah! Know your strengths, know your weaknesses, embrace them both. Your Strengths give you guts and confidence, your Weaknesses keeps you humble and focused that tells you to work smart and efficiently. And so you know yourself. After that know your team, what they can do, their strength and weaknesses. If possible, amplify their strength and cover-up for their weaknesses. Likewise, they will do the same for you and as part of your goal – you must be aware of what you are up against.

Disablers and HP Tanks – Playing to Strengths and Weaknesses

Knowing what you are up against, the team can work efficiently to on who will going to face who, who can work on a certain task according to his strengths. For this game Rhasta chose to face Morphling.

Rhasta vs. Morphling –Keeping it Safe

According to Stephen Covey, the Maturity Continuum can be classified to three levels, Dependence, Independence and lastly Interdependence. Simply putting, Dependence is the lowest aspect of the Maturity Continuum, maybe you don’t have the necessary skills yet – kailangan mo ng alalay, ng tulong, dependent. Independence is when you can take your own task confidently on your own, after being taught or acquiring new skills, Interdependence is when you can finally join in a team because you can give something to the team. You bring your strengths to help the team, it the only way you can be helpful and efficiently grow – staying with your strengths.

.
Serpent Wards – Standing your Grounds, Playing to your Strengths

As a member of the team – you should be aware with how the other team members are doing as well. If they need help or anything – likewise keep them updated with how you are doing.

Listening to the sound of the forest – Keeping updated with the Team

You can sometimes encounter hardships – but don’t falter, when you fail, stand up, reflect and move forward

Everybody wants to go to Heaven – But nobody wants to die

With experience, and a positive outlook to failing – you can move forward. and if you encounter something similar, you can do better.

Retreat – Not always a sign of Cowardice

As the team progress, you can finally get Interdependence to work. Synergy does magic, when the team works as one the team can do more.

Synergy -- Working as One

When the team flee because the odds are overwhelming, make sure nobody is left behind.

Fleeing – looking for each other’s back.

Attack smartly and efficiently. Keeping the focus on one goal. No ego-tripping, especially when the life of the team is at stake. Mutual Cooperation is a must.

Focus Fire – Taking advantage of the adversaries’ weakness

When attacked – Stay with the team to defend, it’s in this time loyalty is measured and tempered.

Teamwork and Loyalty – Standing strong through Hardships

With overwhelming Synergy the team ensures its victory.

One Team – Synergized – Unstoppable

And finally, always stay with the team’s objective. Walang paligoy – ligoy. Taking only the objective – and with that the team can win.

Taking the Only Objective – Winning with the Team.

Ayan, so there we have it. Keeping it simple, siemps in real life more factors should be considered. But the importance of the team is to create synergy and forward to a unified goal.
